Do women have to be naked to get into museums? Women Artists and their place in Art History

Have women been ignored by Art History?

In New York in the spring of 1985, seven women launched the Guerrilla Girls in response to the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition ‘An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture’. The exhibition of 165 artists included only 13 women. The group’s most famous poster posed the question ‘Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum?’.

This talk considers the changing position of women in art history, and looks at examples of female artists who have pushed the boundaries of this male-dominated discipline.
