Art History’s greatest hedonist? The Eccentric (and opium inspired!) Genius of William Burges

In the heart of Cardiff lies the magical and fantastic work which ‘eccentric genius’ and art architect William Burges created for his patron, the Third Marquess of Bute – Cardiff Castle.

Burges was given free rein to create the opulent and imaginative interiors of both castles. This talk considers the unique relationship between artist and patron. Expect lavish details, strange beasts and excessive gilding!
