May Morris – A Story Worth Embroidering

“I’m a remarkable woman…always was, though none of you seemed to think so.” – May Morris

For over a century May Morris has remained in her father’s shadow. Hardly surprising when your father is the polymath who spearheaded the Arts and Crafts movement, a man whose artistic legacy can be seen throughout the world.

But May was an important artist in her own right. Head of Embroidery at Morris and Co at the age of 23, she turned craft into art, designing wallpaper, textiles, jewellery and clothing. At the same time, she was writing books, plays and helping run her father’s business.

This talk stitches together the threads of this remarkable woman’s life and highlights her contribution to the Arts and craft Movement.
