The Wild Beast of Art History: Henri Matisse

Matisse changed the course of the visual arts in the 20th Century.

His subjects were surprisingly conventional: he painted landscapes, figurative works and portraits. But it was his treatment of these themes that made him radical. He used intense, eye-popping colours and curving, sensuous lines – an approach that brought him notoriety as one of the ‘Fauves’, or ‘wild beasts’.
